In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, comfort foods can be perfectly nourishing and good for us to consume. There are some foods that, when you eat them, could improve your mood. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a great source of protein.

As you can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are bad for you just so to feel better! Try several of these instead!
